How to Pack Clothes for Storage
Packing clothes seems like an easy task until you realize one thing: you have way more than you first thought. However, learning how to pack clothes for storage can minimize the time and effort that was once needed. In this article, we’ll provide a few tips on how to keep your clothes in the best condition while you have them stored away.
Wash Your Clothes
Even if your clothes look clean, washing them removes all perfumes, lotions, oils, perspiration, and dead skin. Each of these factors can potentially leave yellow stains and ruin the integrity of your clothes. Clothing that has any traces of bacteria will attract pests if exposed as well.
Decide What to Fold vs. Hang
Fold sweaters, delicates, and most coats. Just as you would pack normal boxes, put the heaviest items at the bottom of the box to keep the lighter materials safe. If items are delicate, wrap them in acid-free tissue paper. Remove all items from the pockets and fasten all pockets before stacking.
Hang furs and dresses in a cotton-based garment bag. Refrain from overpacking the clothes into one space. Instead, space each article of clothing out to allow air to properly flow. This reduces the risk of mold or mildew. For genuine fur, keep at a constant of 50 degrees Fahrenheit and 50% humidity. Please refer to your self-storage specialist before storing fur coats.
Box and Label Properly
Plastic containers with lock lids will keep t-shirts, jeans, or sweaters breathing. These boxes are not attractive to bugs, unlike their traditional cardboard counterparts. Knowing what storage containers to use is vital in understanding how to pack clothes for storage. Traditional cardboard boxes contain a type of glue that bugs feast on. Opting for a cardboard box can tarnish your clothes if your storage space struggles with pests. Regardless, it is always better to steer clear and choose a safer route.
Check Back
On occasion, it’s important to check on your storage unit. Ensure that all boxes are stacked properly, everything is still in place, and the quality of your items is still intact. In the rare occurrence that something is beginning to ruin, you’ll be able to minimize the risk of damage.
